What the Press is saying …

“I implore the members of the United Nations to imagine becoming a shadow of a memory while still alive,” Dinkins wrote in her hand-written letter. “I have been missing from family celebrations for over 50 years.” The Nation

“Death by incarceration is a statement of condemnation against even the possibility that one can transcend their worst moment and be worthy of life outside a cage. It’s a complete negation of one’s inherent right to redemption,” Felix Rosado told Truthout.

“The idea of redemption should be something that the state facilitates as opposed to hindering. They hinder the idea of atonement by imprisoning people but also confining people in the worst expression of themselves for the rest of their lives, even though that’s not who they are,” Carter told the Guardian.

SB 300 Update

Dear community,

As of August 29, 2022, SB 300 will not be moving forward through the California Legislature. This is the final week that bills can pass through the Assembly and SB 300 does not have the necessary votes (the bill requires a supermajority, or ⅔ vote). As a result, it was placed on the inactive file. While this bill will no longer be our pathway to changing felony murder special circumstance law, our work presses onward. Let’s be clear: this is a disappointment, but not defeat. Our collective work has advanced us towards justice – our stories and strength have given hope to our loved ones who are currently incarcerated.
